Antifreeze reverses paralysis in dogs
Purdue scientists treated dogs who are paraplegic following trauma with a chemical cousin of antifreeze to repair spinal neurons. The results appear in December's Journal of Neurotrauma.
The neurons in the injured dogs were crushed from hemorrhaging rather than severed. The mechanism of action seems to be to stop cytoplasm from leaking out of the damaged cell's membrane. Purdue seeking approval for a similar trial in humans.
If polyethylene glycol helps spinal neurons, assuming it can be carried across the blood brain barrier, why not neurons in the brain? Perhaps it could be used to mitigate damage following a stroke.
Antifreeze is ethylene glycol. My wife used to work for a vet and animals like to drink it since it tastes sweet.

I am from India and vetenary/pet treatment is not that very advanced. Any medical help that we can share with our doctors would help.

hi my dogs name is Raphael and he was running to come in the house after we let him out to go to the bathroom, his front legs didn't make it up the first step and he went head first into the cement step, now he is sitting at the emergency vets office and he can't move his front legs, they believe that his brain cannot signal his front legs to move causeing him to have paralysis in his front legs, if you or anyone has any idea's please contact at this email because i have no idea how long he will last like this Thanks

Hi, I have a bloodhound named Elvis. One morning he couldn't use his left hind leg. The vet took x-rays and could not find anything wrong. If you have any thoughts you could share I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

My dog is paralyzed and was diagnosed with Polyradiculoneuritis (Coonhound Paralysis).
Saliva from a raccoon can paralyze your dog by either eating the same food, biting, or scratching your dog. Most dogs fully recover but it can take up to 6 months. Mine has been paralyzed for 9 weeks. He goes to a water treadmill 3 times a week and gets electric stimulation in the legs as well.

My 7 yr. old Black Lab Sammy was suddenly weak in his front legs last week. He has some pain response but his leg condition overall is very weak. Xrays show severe arthritis in his elbows and minimal arthritis in his spine. My vet has checked thoroughly and there is no real explanation. He treated for Tick paralysis just to be safe, has ruled out cancer in the elbow, and possible embolism. He's only on Prednisone Acetate at this point. Any thoughts? I've been massaging him and he has regained some strength in his rear. I'm hoping he'll recover. I'd like to rehab him as soon as possible to avoid any more atrophy.

On Wed. Jan 1st my almost 2yrs old lab came back from his usual morning run and had trouble puting his front left leg down, now its a week later and the front leg is Okay, i think. But now he has no strength in hind legs, he has trouble walking, climbing the sofa, it is as if he has lost all strength in his legs all of a sudden.
I dont understand why so many of us are see this, can anyone explain what is going on? and is acupuncture the best answer, has anyone else tried anything else.
Its really sad to see my dog not being able to do the simple things and he has just been lying around.

I have just sent an e-mail to a gentleman named Dr. Khouri regarding a treatment he
developed that has experienced some success.
It is called CP7. His e-mail is drk@dogparalysis.com. I will share his response.

I have a 9 month old lab. He underwent surgery on both hips for "Hip Dysplasia" and now his right hind leg has nerve damage. It is quite weak, but he still walks on it and puts weight on it. The problem is that he seems to have very little feeling in the lower part of the leg and walks on the top of his paw because it easily turns under when he walks.
The vet thinks he may have accidentially severed the sciatic nerve during the surgery. He said if his leg does not get anybody, we may have to consider ambutation! Obviously this will only be the last resort.
If anybody has had a similar experience and can tell me what they suggest I would really appreciate it!
